Contest Information! Hooray!
We have two contests running for this issue. Here is the first one:
Under comments, please suggest a menu for a mermaid-related meal. Do try to use a favorite story in this edition to inspire your menu. Fairy Tale Food Editor, Cecelia Myers, is stumped on what to feature for this issue's food story.
When we say, "mermaid-related meal," we do not mean some type of hideous mer-cannibalism. It has just been tough for Cecelia to come up with a menu. You should not suggest recipes, just complete menu ideas of about 4-6 items and why you think they would make an appropriate feast. The contest runs from June 18 (starting right now) to June 30, at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The prize is a $25 Amazon gift certificate to be sent via email in US dollars.
SEND ENTRIES VIA EMAIL TO Enchantedconversation(at)gmail(dot).com.
The second contest will award two $25 Amazon gift certificates. Again, the winners will receive the certificates via email and it will be the equivalent of US dollars.
The top two stories and/or poems will be chosen and the topic is this: Explore what it would feel like to be a "Daughter of the Air," as in Andersen's original story. Focus on that experience. Stories must be 2,000 words or fewer. Poems may be any length. The contest begins with this post and ends at June 30 at 6 p.m.
ALL submissions should be done via email. We want NO attachments. Rather, copy and paste your stories or poems into the body of the email, with extra returns to indicate new paragraphs or stanzas. The message line should say: EC Mermaid Contest Entry, with your name included in the message line. We will let you know when we receive an entry. Bios must be included in original entry messages and should not be more than two sentences.
Everyone will be notified as to who won when we print the winning entries. Please read submission guidelines for other information.
All entrants for both contests must be 18 or older, but may live anywhere in the world.

A mermaid menu Inspired by Ashley Vemuri's poem, "To Dance on Swords:
Pre-dinner drinks: Blue Moon Sake Cocktail with Peach Fairyfloss
Salad: Japanese Seaweed Salad with Ginger
Appetizer: Miso Glazed Swordfish Kebabs
Entree: Spicy Squid-ink Curry and Rice
Dessert: Mermaid Amezaiku - handmade Japanese lollipop art
This may sound really silly, but what do you mean by "bios must be included in original entry messages"?
That is a good question. It means for people who are entering the writing contests, that they must include biographical info within the original email message. We no longer accept poems or stories in attachment forms. All stories and poems must be in the email message body, as per new submission guidelines.
Thanks!
Hmm, looks like we need a little competition here, so:
Blackpool Mermaid:
Rocket and Seaweed Salad
Clam Chowder
Fish 'n' Chips with Garlic Peas (Battered Fresh Cod/Haddock, or Scampi if preferred)
Drink: Abbot's Ale, or Smithwick's
Chocolate Fudge Cake a la Mode, or
Three Coral Ice Cream (Caramel, African Vanilla, Chocolate Mint)
Hot Toddy, or
Scotch Single Malt
[An intercontinental celebration of the English seaside, with the definitively New English Clam Chowder accenting an American influence. The menu is selected to bring into tension the blunt, holiday culture of Blackpool and the simple, understated elegance of the aging mermaid.
Thus, it could be prepared as frank or as gourmet as desired--stretch your creativity on the fish'n'chips--startle us with the familiar.
While no wines are listed--wine isn't something I associate with the seaside--I'd recommend a WA Chardonnay or a similarly crisp white to accompany the chowder, and a NZ Sauvignon Blanc for the entree, if desired. A wine to accent the salad would be at the discretion of the chef--be creative with both.
I recommend staying with Abbot's, however, as this decidedly English real ale has a crisp, delicate summer fruitiness underlying the rich malt, that accompanies well both the food and the theme.]
I'm not much of a cook, but I'd say:
Grilled Salmon
Baked potatoes
Garlic bread
Salad
I was wondering, do we really have to be eighteen to enter, and if so, why? I would love to enter, but I am only seventeen.
My Mermaid Meal would NOT have any seafood...(i mean, mermaids are half fish!)So just make normal food but play with the names.
"Seaweed wrap"= Those Vegetable Tortilla wraps with grilled chicken, lettuce, cheese and dressing inside.(you can improvise with the ingredients inside a wrap)
"Green and Purple Pearls"--Grapes off the stem!
"Triton poles"--Thick cut French fries and
"Sea Water"--Blue Mountain Dew to drink!
Thanks and goodluck!

Oh man!
Here I was thinking the meal was for Kids, boy does my entry sound silly now.
Erin:
Your entry is not silly! Actually, I have a sister with some young ones who could use that as great food for an Under the Sea gathering of children.
I think the menu is a keeper for parents needing party inspiration.
Kate
PS: I love silly anyway!
Mermaid Sea Jewel Super
Comfort food for times of turbulent seas. Inspired by my trawlerman Grandfather many seas ago.
Pearl: Moonflower Sea Bean Soup
Emerald: Sea Cumber Sausage
Ruby: Pan-fried Dulse Chips
Saphire: Jelly with Seafoam Cream
Citrene: Hot Caribbean Chocolat
Where do we send the stories for the mermaid contest?
